Men hate shopping for clothes and think it’s a waste of time.

That’s the narrative perpetuated by the countless personal shopping and subscription clothing startups that have popped up over the past few years.

But most of these startups require customers to spend time engaging with a stylist before they even receive a box of threads. So essentially you’re still spending time shopping, just not going to an actual store.

Thats why the mens’ subscription clothing startup Lewk caught my eye. Instead of having customers talk to a stylist (a la TrunkClub) before getting your clothes, they have fully embraced the technology side of their business by relying on an algorithmic decisioning engine to decide which clothes you’ll like best.

When signing up, users do a quick survey asking them questions like what is their preferred fit, colors, and styles. Then, the service gets a little abstract, asking things like what city inspires you and what are your job aspirations.

The service takes all these data points and uses them to choose items of clothing to send you each month. The packages range from 2 items/month or $79, to 4 higher-end items/month for $399.

The startup sources and manufactures its own clothing, working with up and coming designers to give members one-of-a-kind pieces from around the world. These pieces are also offered on the site on an on-demand basis, so you don’t technically need to sign up for a monthly box to take advantage of Lewk’s custom made clothing.

One downside? The site doesn’t accept returns.

But if you’re someone who hates shopping and has decided that AI and algorithms will one day run our lives, you might as well start now with your closet.

Global Connectivity Index 2016 - Huawei report

Huawei has announced its third Global Connectivity Index report during the Global Analyst Summit 2016 in Shenzhen, China. The report sheds light on various global improvements in the field of internet connectivity.

In terms of numbers, United States, Singapore and Sweden top the rankings, while India is ranked 44. The report which measures the progress of 50 nations in investment and deployment of Information and Communications Technology (ICT), says that globally broadband connectivity and speeds have improved enormously from last year.

India with a GCI score of 30 ranks number 44 in the report, and is seen as starter in the world of ICT deployment. India may not have ranked well, but the situation might change rapidly in 2017.

Huawei Global Connectivity Index 2016 notes that the Indian government’s Digital India initiative is driving growth, and improved broadband penetration. The report says the initiative will enable last mile connectivity, bringing many people online for the first time, and enables a whole new opportunity for telecom operators. These numbers come in at a time when India sees expanded 4G rollout, and start of local data centres.

Huawei says the faster deployment of ICT infrastructure will enable cloud, big data, and IoT. India is on the cusp of rapid Internet connectivity and deployment of 4G services. With Reliance Jio launch and Reliance chairman Mukesh Ambani’s statement on India’s ranking improvement, the country could jump several places in terms of ranking next year.

Fitbit data led doctors to shock a patient's heart

It's the first known time doctors used a fitness tracker to guide such a decision.

Doctor's made a decision to shock a man's heart back to rhythm based on his Fitbit data, showing that such devices can do far more than just track your exercise. The 42-year old patient arrive at an ER in Camden, New Jersey with an atrial fibrillation (a fast and irregular heartbeat), meaning he needed immediate medical treatment. But which kind? Using a defibrillator could trigger a stroke in some cases, but not using one could also trigger a stroke. Luckily they noticed he was wearing a Fitbit, and its data confirmed his abnormal heart rate happened around the same time he had a seizure.
According to a research paper, "it was noted that he was wearing a wrist activity tracker (Fitbit Charge HR) which was synchronized with an application on the patient's smartphone, recording his pulse rate as part of a fitness program. [There was] an immediate persistent increase to a range of 140 to 160 bpm at the approximate time of the patient's seizure." That meant the arrhythmia wasn't caused by a chronic condition, meaning it was unlikely that the patient had a blood clot that could be dislodged by a defibrillation. Based on that information, the team elected to do an electrical cardioversion, shocking the patient's heart back to a normal rhythm.
While the case marks the first known time that a patient's fitness tracker was used in sucha direct medical procedure, such devices have already become useful to doctors. Researchers are using Apple's ResearchKit app in conjunction with the Apple Watch to track patients' cardiovascular health, for instance. IBM Watson researchers are also using the Apple Watch to see how sleep affects patients medical stats. Using a Fitbit in a direct medical intervention goes well beyond that, however, and one lucky user is probably glad he had it on.

Odisha schools shut till Apr 20 due to heat wave

The Odisha government on Monday ordered that all schools be closed till April 20 due to a heat wave in the state. A decision on extending the shutdown will be taken after review on April 20, Special Relief Commissioner Pradipta Mohapatra said. If exams are scheduled for this period, they will be conducted in the morning or evening, Mohapatra added.

The State government’s decision came after mercury soared to 45.8 degree Celsius in Bhubaneswar, its all-time high temperature for the month of April. The heatwave which is sweeping the State since last week, would continue to singe till April 20,” said local Meteorological office. The rising heat has led to increasing number deaths due to sunstroke.

Special relief commissioner Mohapatra said he has received 16 reports of deaths allegedly due to sunstroke till date. The previous high for the month of April was in 1985 when the temperature in Bhubaneswar soared to 45.8 degrees Celsius. Last month too, the daytime temperature in the city had touched 42.2 degree Celsius, its all-time high for March.

“The hot wind from western and north-western sector is passing through central India where temperature remained above 40 degree. Though wind flow was from the west direction in the morning, it changed its course to north-west direction by 9 AM resulting in the sharp rise in temperature within three hours through advection of heat,” said Sarat Chandra Sahu, director of Regional Metrological Office. “Due to stable atmosphere, the air is not moving upwards as a result of which condition does not get favourable for cloud formation. Since October, there has been no visible rainfall in the State. The dry nature of soil also helps reflection of heat.”

There is little respite from heatwave for next week as the atmospheric systems, which cause rains, is yet to form. Met officials said Norwesters normally form during such days as hot air becomes lighter and goes upwards allowing the flow of wind from the sea and triggering rain through quick formation of clouds. “But in most parts of Odisha, though surface temperature remains comparatively lower in the night, the air in the upper atmosphere has remained hot. The radiation of hot air from the earth is not able to move up to the upper atmosphere. So blowing of sea breeze towards land is obstructed. So possibility of formation of Norwester is slim,” said Sahu. Today, roads in Bhubaneswar were deserted in the noon as mercury soared.

THE IMPORTANT THINGS IN LIFE

A philosophy professor stood before his class with some items on the table in front of him. When the class began, wordlessly he picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with rocks, about 2 inches in diameter.

He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

So the professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles, of course, rolled into the open areas between the rocks.

He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up the remaining open areas of the jar.

He then asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with a unanimous “Yes.”

“Now,” said the professor, “I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The rocks are the important things – your family, your partner, your health, your children – things that if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full. The pebbles are the other things that matter – like your job, your house, your car. The sand is everything else, the small stuff.”

“If you put the sand into the jar first,” he continued, “there is no room for the pebbles or the rocks. The same goes for your life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff, you will never have room for the things that are important to you. Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take your partner out dancing. There will always be time to go to work, clean the house, give a dinner party, or fix the disposal.”

“Take care of the rocks first – the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand.”

One Pot Rajma-Rice-Indian recipe

Ingredients (Serves 3-4)
1/2 cup raw kidney beans/rajma
1 cup raw rice
3 tbsp. ghee
1 large onion chopped
4 tomatoes chopped
2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. red chilli powder
3 tbsp. rajma masala or garam masala
3 cups water
Cilantro to garnish
  • Soak kidney beans over night or for 6-7 hours.
  • Wash rice and keep them aside.
  • Since kidney beans take slightly more time to cook than rice, start to boil kidney beans separately in a small pan. Just add enough water for beans to be submerged
  • Meanwhile, heat a heavy bottom pan or pressure cooker. Add ghee. Saute chopped onions till they get translucent.
  • Add chopped tomatoes and salt. Cook for 3-4 minutes.
  • Add all spices and mix well.
  • Add boiling kidney beans with the water. Mix in well. Boiling beans separately gives it a jump start in the cooking process.
  • Add washed rice to kidney bean gravy.
  • Add 3 cups or water. Mix well.
  • Cover and let the rice and beans cook for 15 minutes.
  • Mix once. Cover and let them cook for another 10 minutes.
  • Turn of the heat. Do not take the lid off. The steam inside the pot allows rice and beans to further cook. Let it rest for 8-10 before serving.
  • Serve with a tsp, of ghee on top and some onions and lemon pickle on the side. A glass of cold chaash is extremely soothing with hot and spicy rajma rice!

Dal Makhani- Indian food

Dal Makhani is a popular dish from state of Punjab. Rich and hearty, dal makhani is a combination of whole urad (an Indian lentil)and red kidney beans. It goes well with naan (oven-baked flat bread) or tandoori roti (oven-baked whole wheat flat bread).
Serves 2 to3.

Ingredients:
  • 1/2 cup whole urad dal (available in Indian grocery stores)
  • 1/8 cup red kidney beans (Rajma)
  • 1 teaspoon grated ginger
  • 1 minced green pepper or adjust to taste (Hari Mirch)
  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (Haldi)
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon mango powder (Amchoor)
  • 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
  • 1/4 cup cream
  • 2 tablespoons ghee or clarified butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin seed (Jeera)
  • Pinch of asafetida (Hing)
  • 3 to 4 whole red chilies (Sabut Lal Mirch)
  • 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder optional (Lal Mirch)
For garnish:
  • 1/2 tablespoon shredded ginger
Method:
  1. Wash urad dal and kidney beans well. Soak the dal in six cups of water at least for eight hours. After soaking, dal will be about two and a half times the volume of the original.
  2. Place the dal in a pressure cooker with four cups of water. Add the salt, turmeric, ginger, and green chili.
  3. Set to cook over medium high heat. When it begins to steam, turn the heat down to medium. Cook 25 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat. Wait until steam has stopped
before opening the pressure cooker. The dal and kidney beans should be soft and tender.
  5. Lightly mash the kidney beans and dal. Cook for another five minutes on low-to-medium heat.
  6. Add cream, garam masala, and amchoor powder. Cook for ten minutes on low heat.
  7. Heat the ghee in a small
    saucepan. Test the heat by
adding one cumin seed to the oil; if it cracks right away, the oil is ready. Add cumin seeds. When they crack, add the asafetida, red chilies, and red chili powder. Stir for a few seconds.
  8. Add cumin seeds, and as the cumin seeds crack add asafetida, red chilies and red chili powder and stir for a few seconds.
  9. Add one teaspoon of water to keep the spices from burning. Pour the spiced ghee over the dal.
  10. Garnish with shredded ginger.

'Harry Potter' chair sold for almost $400,000 at auction

A chair that author JK Rowling sat on while writing the first two Harry Potter books has sold at a New York auction for nearly $400,000 (£283,000).
The 1930s piece was one of four mismatched chairs that the British author picked up for free in Edinburgh, Scotland, before she rose to fame.
Ms Rowling originally auctioned the chair to benefit her charity in 2002.
She hand-painted the chair, which auctioneer James Gannon said made the piece so valuable.
It features the phrases: "O, you may not find me pretty but don't judge on what you see" and "I wrote Harry Potter while sitting on this chair".
A letter from Ms Rowling was included with the sale.
The letter reads: "I was given four mismatched dining room chairs in 1995 and this was the comfiest one, which is why it ended up stationed permanently in front of my typewriter, supporting me while I typed out Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. My nostalgic side is quite sad to see it go, but my back isn't."
The chair's new owner has chosen to remain anonymous.
The seller, Gerald Gray, from Salford in Greater Manchester, said the winning bid far exceeded his expectations.
"I plan to donate 10% to JK Rowling's charity, Lumos, because that's what she did in the first place," said Mr Gray.
He bought the chair in 2009 after his daughter, a Harry Potter fan, saw it on eBay.

8 Probiotic Foods to Help Aid in Digestion

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeasts that are good for your health, especially your digestive system. They are often called “good” or “helpful” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy. Here are some of the best foods to consume to help your digestion and provide the intestinal bacteria needed to properly break down food.

Bananas

Bananas help restore normal bowel function, especially if you have diarrhoea! They stimulate the growth of friendly bacteria in the bowel. Bananas also produce digestive enzymes to assist in absorbing nutrients.

Dark Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a probiotic food, which also contains antioxidants, something that milk chocolate doesn’t provide.

Kefir

Kefir can be very easily digested. It cleanses the intestines, provides beneficial bacteria and yeast, vitamins and minerals, and complete proteins. If you use kefir regularly it will help relieve all intestinal disorders, promote bowel movement, reduce flatulence and create a healthier digestive system!

Kimchi

Kimchi is an excellent food to promote digestion. The process of fermentation of kimchi creates healthy bacteria, lactobacillus, which is required by the body to keep a healthy state of intestinal flora.

Kombucha

Kombucha is a probiotic beverage. It’s naturally fermented with a living colony of bacteria and yeast. This probiotic food has a number of benefits such as improved digestion, fighting harmful yeast overgrowth, and mood stability.

Sauerkraut

Sauerkraut lowers the risk of digestive disorders like leaky gut syndrome and ulcerative colitis. The primary way sauerkraut helps digestion is through the beneficial bacteria, or probiotics, present in the food.

Tempeh

Tempeh is an excellent choice for people who have difficulty digesting plant-based high-protein foods like beans and legumes or soy foods. Because tempeh is a fermented soy product, its enzymes are partially broken down, making it easier to metabolize.

Yogurt

Yogurt has probiotics, beneficial bacteria that lives in your digestive tract. These bacteria help crowd out harmful microorganisms that can cause intestinal infections.

It was a social experiment, but one that only brought out the good side of people when they see something this disturbing.
Orchestrated by YouTuber Coby Persin, the video illustrated the prevalence of the problem of forced girl child marriages, which destroys the lives of 33,000 girls every day. The 21-year-old YouTube star writes: "New Yorkers didn't stand for a child getting married to an older man, and neither should anywhere else in the world be ok with it!"
According to The United Nations Population Fund estimate, has 1.2 billion girls will be forced into child marriage by 2050. This isn’t a problem of the developing world - even in the UK, underage girls are forced into marriage to older men, according to child marriage charity activist Jasvinder Sanghera.
Ms Sanghera told the Independent : "It's very much a British problem happening to girls and boys in our classrooms, and schools are not spotting the signs. "The evidence is compelling; it's damning, and it's been around in Britain since 2005. "But the cases we know about are just the tip of the iceberg."

Mason Jar Salads

When you’re trying to squeeze in lunch between classes, it can be hard to stay healthy. We all love grabbing a slice of pizza now and then, but sometimes you need some greens and vegetables to keep you going throughout the day. Packing a custom salad for lunch will take you less than 10 minutes, and in case you haven’t noticed, everything is better in a mason jar.
Directions:
1. Start with your dressing at the bottom of the mason jar. The idea is to keep it far away from the leafy greens to make sure they don’t get soggy.
2. Begin with the sturdiest and least absorbent ingredients at the bottom, and work your way to the top. If you use one of our recipes, just add the ingredients in the order they are listed.
3. Top with a hefty serving of greens, and seal the lid.
4. Shake the sealed jar to distribute the dressing before pouring into a bowl.
