The setting is New York's Time Square. The people: A 12-year-old 'bride' and a 65-year-old man, looking like they were posing for wedding photos. And New York was justifiably freaking out.
It was a social experiment, but one that only brought out the good side of people when they see something this disturbing.
Orchestrated by YouTuber Coby Persin, the video illustrated the prevalence of the problem of forced girl child marriages, which destroys the lives of 33,000 girls every day. The 21-year-old YouTube star writes: "New Yorkers didn't stand for a child getting married to an older man, and neither should anywhere else in the world be ok with it!"
According to The United Nations Population Fund estimate, has 1.2 billion girls will be forced into child marriage by 2050. This isn’t a problem of the developing world - even in the UK, underage girls are forced into marriage to older men, according to child marriage charity activist Jasvinder Sanghera.
Ms Sanghera told the Independent : "It's very much a British problem happening to girls and boys in our classrooms, and schools are not spotting the signs. "The evidence is compelling; it's damning, and it's been around in Britain since 2005. "But the cases we know about are just the tip of the iceberg."
